Do creative processes stem from human reason, imagination, affection, or are they merely artefacts that self-justify themselves? Is art an event that is governed solely by the temporal order of human life, or is its ultimate nature trans/atemporal? Is aesthetics a distinctive feature of art phenomenology, or does it also apply to everyday social practises? How does all art, regardless of the codes and grammars that govern it, owe something to a mindful awareness on the flow of life? How can a contemporary Zen master's explanation of a Buddha sutra be helpful to elucidate and expand upon these inquiries? Drawing on insights from Schopenhauer, Borges, Raul Brandão, and Thich Nath Hanh, this essay aims to provide a glimpse of some of the answers to these questions.
