Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the text and context of the Timor-Leste resistance poems, especially the poems that were published in the magazine Jornal do Povo Maubere between September-December 1975. The purpose of this analysis is to map the main themes and describe the historical context that conditioned their forms of expression. This analysis relies on the perspective of Historicism, which examines texts in their historical context and discusses their relationship with real events. However, this analysis relies more on the Old Historicism approach, in which the text is the main object and its historical context is the background. This analysis finds that the dominant themes of these poems are awakening and change, moral and political critiques of the UDT, a call to action, and a vision for the struggle. Meanwhile, the historical context of these poems included the 1974 Carnation Revolution in Portugal, Indonesian intelligence operations and the UDT coup, the Indonesian military offensive and war, and the political ideology of FRETILIN at that time.
