Although Portuguese languages – as well as any other language – have certain registers raised to standard varieties in each country where Portuguese is the official language, the differences between their varieties can be observed not only in the formal aspects of these languages (syntax and semantics, for example) but also in the ways of being and acting in the world and of meaning making in that language (socio-discursive aspects). Considering the semantic and pragmatic logic of polar and alternative interrogative sentences and their response patterns as well as the socio-discursive theory of language, this article aims to discuss some characteristics of the sociopragmatic functioning of a Timorese Portuguese, which distinguish it from other variants of Portuguese. For this, three narrative vignettes were analysed at two levels: semantic-pragmatic and discursive. The linguistic and discursive aspects analysed exemplify discursive practices in which a Timorese interactional culture in Portuguese emerges, differentiating this from other variants of Portuguese.
